1. Course Description
To survive and succeed in today’s highly competitive and volatile business environment, organizations need to attract, select, retain, motivate, and engage talented employees. Nonetheless, most of the organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to attract and retain talented employees, who frequently change their jobs due to availability of a variety of job opportunities. The field of Human Resource Management (HRM) has evolved to meet these challenges. HRM is primarily concerned with systems and processes for making decisions about the human capital of the organization. The goal of HRM is to help the organization to take a strategic competitive advantage and succeed by adopting various means, such as increasing efficiency in the use of human resources, maintaining legal compliance, and enhancing employees’ motivation and engagement to work, to name a few.

The primary purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the field of HRM. This course will help the students to acquire required knowledge and a range of skills that will help them to better understand and deal effectively with various HRM-related issues in the workplace.


2. Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you:

Ø Will be able to understand how HRM fits into the broader organizational context
Ø Will be able to understand the major HRM needs of most organizations
Ø Will be able to understand managerial applications of HRM
Ø Will be able to understand processes and issues in implementation of HR policies in an organization

3. Required Text Books and Reading Material

The prescribed textbook for this course is Human Resource Management (14th Edition) by Gary Dessler and Biju Varkkey, Pearson Education Inc.

Articles from research/professional journals and chapters from different books will be assigned as additional readings for the course. These will be circulated in soft or hard copy form to the students.

Pedagogy

The course objectives will be achieved by using a combination of lectures, class discussion, case analysis, class presentation, and experiential activities.

Quizzes and Assignments

1. Quizzes: Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. No Makeup Exam will be held.
2. Assignments: A detailed note on the assignment and project work will be put up on the course page on AIS once the course begins.

6. Academic Integrity

Please note that students found involved in academic dishonesty will be dealt with as per the Manual of Policies. Academic dishonesty consists of misrepresentation by deception or by other fraudulent means. In an academic setting this may take any number of forms such as copying or use of unauthorized aids in tests, assignments, examinations, term papers, or cases; plagiarism; talking during in-class examinations; submission of work that is not your own without citation; submission of work generated for another course without prior clearance by the instructor of both courses; submission of work generated by another person; aiding and abetting another student’s dishonesty; and giving false information for the purpose of gaining credits.

No Network Policy

All students are requested not to operate any network enabled devices such as cell phones, etabs, ipads or any other electronic network enabled devices inside the classroom during the HRM sessions. In case you are compelled to carry it in person, you may keep it in the switched off mode. Anyone found to operate such devices during the session timings shall get penalized with a 5% marks deduction from the total evaluation scores for every incident of violation noted by the facilitator. No discussion or negotiation will be entertained at all with respect to this.
