1. Course Description
Communication is considered to be the life-blood of an organization. The course aims to train managers to be effective speakers and to have good interpersonal communication skills. The course content on both written & oral communication is designed to improve the participant’s organizational effectiveness as managers and personal effectiveness as communicators.

2. Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to:

· Identify their shortcomings and speak with confidence
· Manage themselves, their content, and their audience in a presentation
· Plan & conduct business meetings
· Frame written content of certain business documents

3. Required Text Book/s and Reading Material

Book: Ober & Newman: Communicating in Business 8th Edition. Cengage publishers.

Students will also be expected to read all other reading material given or referred to in class from time to time.

4. Tentative Session Plan

Broadly, the course in various sessions, covers the following:

Session I
One-minute-presentation practice and recording

Session II
Feedback on Presentations recorded

Session III
1. Basics of communication

2. Skills of communication (mainly listening, speaking, reading and writing): a glimpse

Session IV
1. Topic selection by groups for presentation

2. Discussion on topics (group wise) with faculty

Session V
1. Ist 2-minute presentations by 50% of class

2. Effective listening and feedback

Session VI
1. Ist 2-minute-presentations by remaining 50% of the class.

2. Case Analysis Assignment.

Session VII
Effective Presentation Skills

1. Points to remember:
A) with regard to the subject
B) with regard to the audience
C) with regard to yourself

2. Managing your Audience
3. Handling the Aids
· Making Presentations keeping in view A, B & C

Session VIII
Communicating in Teams (Negotiating, Asserting & Pursuing)

Sessions IX to XIII
1. 2nd Individual Presentation by 5 groups
2. Project Presentations by 5 groups
3. Feedback by faculty
Session XIV
Meetings and Conferences: Planning, Conducting, and Following-up

Session XV
Communicating as a leader: Roleplay and feedback

Session XVI
1. Basics of Effective Writing.
2. An exercise.

Session XVII
Framing business Messages: Good news, Bad news, persuasive, etc.

Session XIX
Framing business documents: an exercise for evaluation

Session XX
Presentation on TGP by all groups.


5. Evaluation
Individual Presentation (IP) 1= 10%

IP2 = 10%

Project Presentation = 20%

Case Assignment =10%

GTR Presentation = 10%

Business Writing = 10%

End Term = 30%

6. Academic Integrity and Code of Conduct:

Any unfair means in examinations will invite heavy penalty. It may also invite an ‘F’ in the component/course.

Late comers to the class will not be given attendance. They may also be refrained from attending the class. .

IMPORTANT: PARTICIPANTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO READ ALL THE HANDOUTS GIVEN IN CLASS FROM TIME TO TIME AND, THE TOPICS COVERED IN CLASS FROM THE BOOK GIVEN TO THEM AS PART OF THE READING MATERIAL.

THE PARTICIPANTS WILL MAKE GROUP PRESENTATIONS ON VARIOUS TOPICS RELATED TO COMMUNICATION AS IT TAKES PLACE IN ORGANIZATIONS. THIS WILL ENCOURAGE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS & REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES.
