1. Course Description

Organizations today are operating in a volatile environment. To cope with rapid changes which are triggered from not only the business environment, which is fiercely competitive, but also from within, organizations are trying to devise a variety of strategies to cope with these changes. In their journey to not only survive and sustain, but also to grow, they are initiating planned changes by re-orienting their systems, structures and processes, and particularly organizational processes. This course is designed to provide the students exposure to some of the strategies that are being adopted by organizations, both in India and abroad to manage change. The students after completing this course should be in a position to appreciate: (i) How organizations go through the process of managing change (ii) Measures or strategies adopted to manage change.

2. Course Objectives

Organization Change and Development as a subject of study has assumed importance in organizations primarily for effecting change in the organization pacing with the changing strategies and business goals. Today’s organizations cannot afford to delay their response to change as such delay can adversely affect achieving their strategic intents and business goals. Moreover organizations need to sustain and grow in a volatile environment. This requires not only bringing change in their business practices, and restructuring, but also focusing on building internal capabilities. Without talent focus, organizations are likely to face the challenge of long-term sustainability and growth. All these extend the scope organizational change and development, encompassing areas like; process of organizational change, management of organizational change, organizational development, various interventions and strategies, and contemporary issues in organizational development.

In the above backdrop organizational change and development course has been designed focusing on developing this knowledge of the students in understanding theories and the process, aligning with the strategies and business goals of the organizations. With class inputs students will be able to master theories and conceptual issues pacing with strategies and business goals of the organizations, and relate with various change and development areas. All these areas will be discussed with industry examples, case studies, multiple exercises, etc. to enable students to develop their professional competence.

3. Course contents

This course helps in understanding the major issues and concepts in organizational change and development, covering fairly advanced level topics like; understanding of organizational systems and structures, organizational change process, organizational effectiveness and excellence, management of organizational change, influence of power and leadership for organizational change, influence of technology, culture, performance, and TQM practices for organizational change, organizational development, interventions and strategies for organizational development, and contemporary issues in organizational development. Also the course covers in detail strategic and business issues that merit consideration while organizational change and development. The course aims to develop students as matured change management professional, which is in demand in today’s organizations.

4. Learning Outcomes

After going through this course, students would be able to develop following skill-sets and knowledge base:

2. Understanding the linkage of organizational change and development with the strategies and business goals of the organizations.

3. Developing knowledge and expertise in effective organizational change and development integrating with learned theories with the organizational practices.

6. Academic Integrity

Students have to show highest level of academic integrity in writing their assignments, giving presentations, and answering to the exercises, including their end-term examination. Plagiarism, copying, etc, will be seriously viewed, and anybody found to be in this will be penalized, like; no grades, expulsion from the programme, repeating the programme, etc., depending on the nature of offense. Faculty will be available for on-line help also, as may be required by the students time to time. Personal meeting with the faculty, if required may be arranged with prior appointment.
