Course Objectives

Organizations consist of people with formally defined roles who work together to achieve organizational goals. As the organizational goals are achieved through people, it is necessary to identify and recruit the employees who best fit the organizational recruitments. Recruitment and selection is a core human resource management activity whose importance is bound to increase due to the following factors: (1) Growing role of human capital in organizational success and (2) increased blurring of the line between line and staff managers.

This course aims to equip the students with the following skills:-
1. Understand the key elements of the recruitment and selection process
2. Align the recruitment and selection process with other organizational processes Course Description

Organizational goals are achieved through people and hence it is of paramount importance for an organization to select proper employees. According to Harvard Business Review, 80% of employee turnover in organizations is due to bad hiring while the US Department of Labor and Statistics suggests that the average cost of a bad hiring decision can equal 30% of the individual’s first-year potential earnings. Hence, HR professionals need to design selection procedures that will enable firms to hire competent employees at low costs.

This course aims to enable students develop the skills required for designing and running a selection program. This includes performing job analysis and creating the required job descriptions and job specifications; understand the statistical techniques behind employee selection; conduct employee selection interviews and analysing employee performance.

Learning Outcomes

The students who diligently go through the course will display the following skills:

1. Understand the measurement methods and issues in selection
2. Perform job analysis and link the job analysis to the recruitment and selection process
3. Understand the processes behind attracting, screening and shortlisting candidates
4. Conduct ability, personality and performance assessment for employee selection
5. Measure performance of teams
6. Contrast the selection and recruitment techniques of the course with the actual selection and recruitment techniques in an organization and understand the reasons behind the discrepancy


Course Delivery Method

The course will consist of a series of lectures, discussions and in-class exercises. The students are expected to read the chapters before coming to class as that would be necessary for the in-class discussions.

Course Material

Recommended Text: Employee Selection in Human Resource Management by Barrick, Field and Gatewood, CENGAGE Learning India Private Ltd., 2016.

The text-book would be supplemented by additional reading materials. The material will be distributed prior to the relevant session.

Course Evaluation

1. Quiz 1: This will test learning objective 1. Weightage 10%.
2. Exercise on job analysis: This will test learning objective 2. The exercise will be done in groups of 5. Weightage 10%.
3. Quiz 2: This will test learning objective 3. Weightage 10%.
4. Quiz 3: This will test learning objective 4. Weightage 5%.
5. Quiz 4: This will test learning objective 5. Weightage 5%.
6. Group Assignments: This will test learning objective 6 and needs to be done in groups of 5 (same groups as exercise 2). The students need to identify any organization of their choice in Bhubaneswar or other nearby cities. They should study the recruitment and selection practices of the chosen organization and compare it with the recruitment and selection processes covered in the class, specifically detailing the discrepancies. 7. End Term: This will test all learning objectives (objectives 1-6). It will consist of 4 questions of 10 marks, out of which 3 need to be attempted, and one compulsory question related to the project. Academic Integrity

Students are expected to adhere to the norms and rules of academic conduct. This includes refraining from using unfair means in examination and plagiarism in projects, citing documents properly and contributing equally to group projects. Any incidence of academic misconduct will be dealt with as per institute rules. Projects and assignments will be checked for plagiarism and those exceeding the 10% limit will not be awarded any marks. Use of lap tops and mobiles is not allowed in the classroom.
