1. Course Description

Organizations are recognizing that contextual performance, which improves the social and psychological base of the organization, is as important for organizational effectiveness as employees’ task performance. However, many activities contributing to contextual performance are not easily captured in the standard job description. Also, the standard management processes that reduce employee activity to the mandated job tasks fail to do justice to the innate human desire for autonomy and self-initiated effort. This course aims to educate students about the theoretical bases of proactive behaviour in organizations; the different ways in which proactive behaviour are classified; the organizational benefits of employee proactive behaviour and the methods to encourage proactive behaviour among employees. Proactive behaviour falls within the broad rubric of positive organizational behaviour and is increasingly becoming important in the knowledge economy where employee quality, motivation, and proactivity, rather than financial or physical assets, is becoming the prime driver of success.

2. Student Learning Outcomes
· Be able to understand the importance of proactive work behaviours for organizational effectiveness
· Be able to understand the role of organizational processes in facilitating proactive work behaviour
· Be able to identify the differences between different forms of proactive behaviour
· Be able to analyze the type of proactive behavior required in their organizations

Handouts of the required chapters from Udai Pareek’s book will be distributed in the class.

The course will concentrate more on the conceptual aspects rather than the statistical aspects.

5. Evaluation

The different components of evaluation are:

6. Academic Integrity

Students are expected to adhere to the norms and rules of academic conduct. This includes refraining from using unfair means in examination and plagiarism in projects and citing documents properly. Any incidence of academic misconduct will be dealt with as per institute rules. Projects and assignments will be checked for plagiarism and those exceeding the 10% limit will not be awarded any marks. Use of laptops and mobiles is not allowed in the classroom. Faculty will be glad to provide help through online medium or personal meetings.
