Course Description

An organization does not really accomplish anything on its own. Plans do not accomplish anything either. Endeavors succeed or fail because of the people involved and the way they work with each other in the organization. Apart from their own motivation, personality, attitudes and other individual factors, individuals’ performance in the organization is also influenced by other members of their team and the people in leadership positions. To develop a better understanding of various interpersonal and group processes, this course focuses on the concepts of group and team formation, group and team dynamics, characteristics of effective teams, power and politics, and conflict management and negotiation.

In addition to helping the students to understand group and team dynamics, this course also focuses on developing leadership skills among students. Good leaders have always been expected to solve new problems, capitalize on new opportunities and navigate through the ever-changing landscape of business. Leadership is a complex process by which the leader influences others to perform and achieve team/organizational goals. To develop leadership skills, this course provides to students the basis for understanding what leadership is and what effective leaders do to be successful.

Student Learning Outcomes

After participating in this course, students will understand the nature and process of group and team building and the characteristics of an effective leader. Specifically, students will be able:

Ø To understand the formation of groups and teams within the organization
Ø To understand about group dynamics and how to work effectively with others in teams
Ø To identify and grasp various interventions and phases that help in the formation of effective groups and teams
Ø To understand and assess leadership qualities in themselves and others
Ø To learn how to develop leadership skills to effectively lead their team and/or organization
Pedagogy

The course will be delivered through a mutual discussion between all participants of the course including the instructor. The instructor’s job will be to share the basic theories/tools/insights either through lectures, appropriate videos, or management game/simulation pertinent to the topic on hand, and then facilitate discussions to help elaborate the relevance of various theoretical concepts in the organizational context. Students will be expected to actively participate in the process of developing an understanding of the topics in the classroom. The pedagogy would also provide some opportunity for participants to link course contents to the actual workplace through a group assignment involving some practical work.

Description of Evaluation Components

Class Participation: This is for contributions made to class sessions, not just attendance. Class participation will be assessed in terms of frequency and quality of contribution made by a participant to the activities going on in the classroom. Class participation can take various forms such as asking questions, sharing one’s experiences or observations that are relevant to the discussion at hand, answering questions raised by the instructor during the course of instructions, extending the answers to instructor questions provided by other students, enthusiastically participating in all the classroom activities and exercises.

Individual Assignment: Detailed guidelines for the individual assignment will be provided during the first session of the class.

Group Learning Paper (GLP): This paper is to be based on your observations of group dynamics during the group meetings you would have had to discuss class assignments and other group projects. The entire group would get together to write this paper and there would be one submission per group.

Issues, such as - how did the group manage its time; how did the group manage conflicts; how did the group manage problem members; what steps were taken to cut on the process loss due to working in groups; what attitude did the group take towards innovative ideas; how did the group manage transactions among members – were there times and individuals who would typically respond more critically, criticize others, or enjoyed working in groups or enjoyed just being with group members – are examples of material which can be reported in the paper.

This write-up should be incorporated in a paper which would be no longer than 6 typed pages in Times Roman (font size 12). Please print on both sides. Please indicate your group members on the first page.

The paper is expected to reflect an integration of the experiences/reality with the concepts, theories, and principles that are covered in the class.
