The Personal Growth Laboratory (PGL) is a Human Process Laboratory, which is designed to help each individual realize his/her own potential more fully and to increase his/her ability to work effectively with others in a variety of situations. By gaining an insight into oneself and by understanding interpersonal processes, one can learn how to develop effective teamwork. Individuals can then join forces to bring about organisational and community change and improvement.
The PGL tries to create a climate encouraging learning, understanding, insight, and skills in the areas of Self, and Group, as shown below.
Correctly perceiving effects of behaviour on others.
Correctly understanding effect of other’s behaviour on self.
Understanding dynamic complexities in group behaviour.
CAP ON STUDENT NUMBER:
There is a cap on the number of students who can register for the course. The maximum number of registrations will be 15. Students will have to register online in AIS as well as sign for the course in the Dean’s office to complete the registration. In case the number of students exceeds 15, the first 15 students to have signed at the Dean’s office will be allowed to take the course.
COURSE PLAN:
The course creates a space, a setting and a time for the individual to gain learning, understanding, insights, and skills in the areas of Self & Interpersonal Relations, and ask some basic existential questions such as –
Ø Who am I? Ø What are my own patterns of behaviour, my feelings and motivations? Ø What is blocking me and what do I do about it? Ø How do I relate to the world and people, and how do I impact them? Ø How does the behaviour of other people affect me? Ø How do I become more effective in my interpersonal interactions? The discussions and experiences will revolve around these themes and students will be invited to explore and reflect on themselves in these areas.
CLASS SCHEDULE
This is an experience based learning course. It is recommended that students attend all the sessions to gain the maximum learning. The classes will be spread over two weekends during the term, and will be scheduled after the Placement week.
METHODOLOGY
The methodology is participative and exploratory. It will include both structured and unstructured group work. Psychometric instruments and experiential exercises will be used to help students gain greater insights into themselves and interpersonal processes. Each one is invited to share whatever aspects of the journey of life and relationships which he/she wishes to share. There are no compulsions for specificities of sharing. There is only invitation which an individual gives himself/herself for sharing and reflection. The role of the faculty is to facilitate this exploration and reflection. The benefits derived from this course will therefore depend on a person’s interest, choices and willingness to work, and on how much of oneself one is willing to invest.
READINGS:
A set of theoretical readings will be provided, which will have to be read during the course. The end term exam will be based on the theoretical readings.
EVALUATION:

Some of the questions that you might use to help you reflect are - · What questions did you begin the journey with? @The Personal Learning Paper is an exploration of yourself that you will pen. You will begin writing it one week after the course is completed. It is a reflective autobiography where you look back on the past, at the present and onto the future. It will encompass your learning journey, and your reflections on how you have become the way you are, what you have now learnt about yourself and how you plan to take your learning forward. A more detailed write-up on the focus points for this assignment will be circulated at the beginning of the course.
