1. Course Description
Today it is self-evident that information technology is fundamental to the practice of general management. The Human Resource Information Systems elective is designed to improve participant’s understanding of this technology, the people who work with it, and its role in organizational performance. With the advent of this technology, comes a need for its use in the human resources function, which this course particularly focuses on.
Information technology spans all business functions. From their genesis as automated accounting systems, information systems have evolved to become the core of (and sometimes the impediment to) many organizations' competitive strategies. The course is designed to investigate both the challenges and the opportunities that are the result of this pervasiveness. It is intended to improve fluency with and comfort in addressing the issues relating to the management of information technology in the human resources function facing most organizations today.
2. Student Learning Outcomes
In particular, this course aims to:
§
create awareness in upcoming managers, of different types of information systems in an organisation so as to enable the use of computer resources efficiently, for effective decision making.
§
understand various Management Information Systems operating in an organisation particularly in the Human Resources Management functional area and explain its relationship with the various other activities of the organisation.
§
understand how Human Resources Information Systems are bought/developed and implemented for various levels in an organisation.
§
explore the use of some common Information Systems development tools.

4. Tentative Session Plan
The entire course is “application oriented” and in keeping with the purpose of making the participant an effective decision maker, the course is based on both lecture sessions and practical work. The classroom sessions will be participative in nature with demonstration of important concepts and applications where possible. The participant will be able to apply the concepts in practical sessions and during assignments that are included for the purpose, as part of the course.
The course will be conducted in 20 sessions of 1½ hour each to be held based on an announced schedule. The topics to be covered are enumerated below:

5. Evaluation:
The components of evaluation to compute the final grade are as under:
1 Mid Term Exam: 20 %
The Mid Term exam will be held during the class on a pre-announced date. It will be a closed book exam with coverage of topics covered until the class prior to the mid-term exam.
1 Individual Assignment: 10 %
The individual assignment consists of choosing an article from any journal of the participant’s choice and doing a review (between 10 and 15 pages) on any topic connected with HRIS. The topic (with full reference) for this individual assignment is to be submitted by the end of the 5thclass and the final word-processed “soft copy” and report (including soft copy of articles, if applicable) by the date of the mid-term exam.
1 Group Assignment/Project: 25 % (10 % Presentation + 15 % Report)
Group assignments are to be done in groups of 5 students. Names of members of the group are to be given in by the 5thclass.A sheet containing instructions for the group assignment/project is being circulated separately. The final word-processed “soft copy” and report are to be submitted by the end-term exam date. Each group has to make a presentation in the sessions kept aside for the purpose and suggestions/comments given as a feedback in the class may be incorporated in the final report.
Class Participation/Attendance: 10 %
Since the main inputs for the course will be from lecture sessions, it is important for participants to be present for all classes and to participate in the discussions held in class. Participants should be prepared to contribute to the discussion of the assignments for each class. The quality of input is more important than the quantity. Institute rules will apply to participants failing to comply with the minimum requirements of attendance in class.
End Term Examination: 35 %
The end term exam will be an open book exam that will cover the entire course. Participant’s skill and knowledge will be tested during the exam.
6. Academic Integrity
Students involved in academic dishonesty will receive a ZERO gradeon the particular component in which the violation occurred. Academicdishonesty consists of misrepresentation by deception or by other fraudulentmeans such as copying or use of unauthorized aids in tests, talking duringin-class examinations; aiding another student’s dishonesty; and giving falseinformation for the purpose of gaining credits. Note:

Academic Integrity will be adhered as per the norms and policy given by the Institute.
§
Students identified with side talking will be asked to leave the class immediately.
§
Cell phone will be seized if it rings in the class and will be handed over to the Dean’s office
§
Students who have not completed assignment given in the previous class will not be permitted for next class.
§
While group learning is encouraged, plagiarism, cheating, academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.
§
All decisions related to integrity issues will be decided as per the manual of policy.
7. Note
Since technology is such an important part of the study of human resources information systems, each individual has the scope to investigate an emerging information technology or industry trend and make a presentation about it to the class. The presentation should include a discussion of the technology or trend, a layman's description of how it works (if appropriate), an analysis of its potential value to organizations, and a discussion of its limitations, costs, and so forth. The presentation time for the session, including time for questions and discussion is to be planned together with the course facilitator. Hand-outs to the rest of the class are encouraged. No separate marks are kept for the evaluation of these presentations but enhanced learning is the natural outcome of this reading.
