PGDM 2011-12: Term-V
IT Governance & Management
Prof. Dipak Misra
Objectives:
IT Governance is the organizational capacity exercised by the Board, executive management and IT management to control the formulation and implementation of IT strategy and in this way to ensure the fusion of business and IT - business IT alignment. However, it has been observed that many IT initiatives have failed to deliver the bottom-line results that the companies had hoped for. This calls for an urgent need to understand and appreciate the nitty-gritty of the underlying concepts that explain the root causes of these. Also we need to delve deeper and know exactly what firms must do to realize the true value of their IT investments. Based on recent studies worldwide, it has been revealed that IT business value directly results from effective IT governance. Firms with superior IT governance have at least 20% higher profits than firms with poor governance.
Given the above, the objective of this course is to explore both the theoretical models and practices regarding IT governance. First, we introduce the IT governance concepts consisting of the structures, processes, and the mechanisms. Next, we discuss the integration strategies and tactics for IT governance which presents the past developments and the current challenges for complex organizations as regards governing the portfolio of IT applications, IT development, and IT operations. Next, we will explore how organizations can diagnose and design IT governance architecture for future performance improvement and sustained business growth. We will have a thorough understanding and holistic picture of effective IT governance practices. Next, an emerging strategy/framework for E-Business IT governance will be explored which is based on the fundamental re-directions in global e-business IT governance. This applies to companies that seek to integrate Internet, intranet and the World Wide Web technologies into their business activities in some form of an e-business model. The performance management and reviews mechanisms of IT governance including business-IT alignment maturity assessment models will also be explored. Last, there will be case discussions on the successful implementations of IT governance in selected companies.
