Cases in Finance

Prof. Sunil K Parameswaran

This course is intended to help the students apply the case methodology for analyzing problems associated with the various facets of Finance. By the end of this course, students will not only learn the art of case analysis, but will also have an opportunity to develop a case by themselves. The cases will cover the following areas:

1. Corporate Finance
· Cost of Capital
· Capital Structure
· Capital Budgeting
2. International Finance
3. Financial Derivatives
4. Working Capital Management
5. Valuation

The textbook for this course is: `Case Problems in Finance’ – by Kester, Ruback, and Tufano, Tata McGraw-Hill.

While analyzing the cases we will invariably come across interesting aspects of Finance which warrant more attention. Consequently we will devote time to discussing such issues as and when they arise.

The students will be divided into groups of four-five members each. Each group will make a written submission on one of the discussed cases as well as one of the identified academic issues. This component will have a weightage of 30%.

There will be a mid-term exam. This will entail a case analysis and will have a weightage of 30%. This is an individual exercise and not a group exercise.

The final exam will require each student group to develop a case. The faculty will give a broad sketch to each group and they have to develop a case around it. This will have a weightage of 40%.
