Employment Relations

Course Objectives: Understanding “Employment Relations” in the dynamics of organizational and institutional relationships is important for executives to regulate the employment relationship. This course attempts to provide insights into understanding the employment relationship in a liberalizing, deregulated and global environment.

As a result of succeeding in this course, participants will be better able to:


· Understand the nature of employment relationship from individual and collective perspectives in the non-traditional, professional and contingent labour markets.

· Identify the central significance of the basis of employment relations from the institutional perspective.

· Gain insights into the future employment relationship in the context of liberalization, privatization and globalization.

Delivery Method:

Delivery is primarily based on case discussion, case analysis, visual episodes and using knowledge sharing methods.

Organization of the Course:

The course has 10 themes which are organized into two parts as pre-mid-term module and post-mid-term module. The pre-mid-term module has 5 themes (themes 1 to 5) and focuses on the nature and issues of employment relationships from the individual and organizational perspectives. The post-mid-term module has 5 themes (themes 6 to 10) and focuses on the nature and issues of employment relationships from the institutional perspective.

                      Assessment of Performance:

                      1. Quiz (30%) · The questions for the quizzes are drawn from the case material, reading material assigned for the theme, text book chapters, instructor’s presentation and the relevant news material given for the themes. The average score of total quizzes (3 to 5 quizzes) would be taken for evaluation. Please note that no makeup quiz would be conducted under any circumstances.

                      2. Forum Discussions (20%)
                      · Every participant is encouraged to participate in the forum threads started by the instructor. Detailed guidelines for forum discussions will be provided in the course resources page in AIS. 3. Term Paper (20%) · A group of 6 members would write a term paper based on literature review and field-work related to the themes in the course. The guidelines related to groups, topics, methodology, schedule and submission for the assignment will be provided by the instructor.

                      · Hard copy of the assignment should be submitted for evaluation on the date specified by the instructor. · Any member from the group would be invited to clarify the queries related to assignment during the theme discussion related to the assignment.

                      4. End-Term Examination (20%)

                      · The end-term examination would be a closed-book examination evaluating the concepts learnt in the post mid-term themes.

                      4. Course Involvement 10%

                      · The measures of course involvement would be case preparation and analysis, and other initiatives to enrich the course content, process and outcome like quality of participation in the forum discussions. Every class missed by participants will reduce two marks from the total score whatever be the reason.
