Pre-requisites: Successful completion of OB-I, OB-II, and HRM

Aim of the Course:
To enable students recognize the various functional areas of international human resource
management leading to awareness about the managerial challenges faced by multinational
corporations with regard to their human resource management.

Objectives of the Course:

· Identify the various approaches to international HRM
· Increase knowledge on the different concept and perspectives of international HRM
· Systematically analyse the relation between culture, strategy, structure and performance
· Critically appraise management policy, practices and systems in the field of international HRM

Learning Outcomes:
1. Diagnose and analyze human resource-related problems in international context

2. Understanding and knowledge of the main issues involved in the management of human
resources in the international context. 3. Apply appropriate solutions, taking particular account of the implications of the local culture. 4. Evaluate the role of the manager and make suggestions for the most effective utilization of managerial skills in any particular cultural context. 5. Work effectively within a team, bearing in mind the impact of cultural diversity. 6. Evaluate the process of communication and the possible sources of cross-cultural misinterpretations.

Pedagogy Strategy:

In order to achieve the above learning outcomes, the course will be conducted in a seminar
environment and will use a combination of class lectures, case studies, key research paper
discussions, and tutorials. Participants will also be expected to have read the assigned reading
materials for each session and come prepared in class for active participation.

Expected Workload:
In addition to the regular weekly classroom hours for this course, the students are expected to spend
additional 10 hours per week for the course in terms of assigned readings and thinking about the
course.

Assessment:
Being a course in the final term, the primary focus of the assessment would be to test the ability of
the students to transfer their conceptual learning to the real world managerial context. In order to
achieve this, the following would comprise the assessment items.

Mid Term Exam: (15 marks): This will contain a set of multiple choice questions aimed at testing the
conceptual clarity of the participants with regard to the course content. Reliance on memory is
expected to be minimal. All discussions undertaken in the class till the date of the exam will form a
part of this test.

End Term Exam: (40 marks): There will be an examination, which the students will be required to
take at the end of the course. The examination details would be finalized after consulting with the
course participants. Class Seminars: (10 Marks): The students will have to give seminars to the class on the readings that will be assigned by the instructor based on the course outline. The instructor may however, assign new readings not mentioned in the outline. The students should be presenting the readings to the class putting special emphasis on the key concepts, arguments, research methodology adopted, criticisms of the argument, and new concepts that they identify through the reading. The parameters for evaluation will be finalized in consultation with the participants in the first session. Case Studies: (15 marks). This will contain a series of case studies throughout the course highlighting various international HRM issues. The students would be required to analyze these in groups of 2 members and make presentations to the entire class. A written report of their analyses will also have to be submitted for each case in hard copy to the instructor. The parameters for the evaluation of the case studies will be finalized in the class after discussion with the students. Practice Report: (20 marks). The students in dyads would be required to identify a multinational company of their choice and undertake an in-depth study about a particular international HRM practice that the company undertook in the last 2 years. The students need to submit report of their findings and make suggestions to overcome/solve the issue studied in the form of a soft copy report between 2000 to 2500 words including proper referencing. No presentation in the class is required.

Instructor Profile:
Andrew Dutta is a Post Graduate (Gold Medalist) in Business Finance. He did his Fellowship in
Human Resource Management and his PhD in Information Systems. Andrew is teaching post
graduate students since 1998.
