COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Module- I
To provide an in-depth knowledge of the IT Act, 1961 provisions
To know how to use tax planning devices in managerial decision making
Module-II
To provide an overview of CEA basic provisions and CENVAT
To provide an overview of Service Tax Provisions
The course is divided into 2 units. Each unit has certain portions reserved for students for self-reading. Questions will be asked from all portions.
MODULE- I:
PROVISIONS OF IT ACT AND PLANNING: (24 hours)

Financial management decisions & Tax Planning:
i) Capital structure

ii) Dividend policy iii) Bonus shares

Planning for new industries: Form of organisation, Location of business, Nature of business
(self-reading)

MAT & Planning
·
Tax planning with respect to managerial decisions:
Purchase of asset out of own fund or from borrowed fund, Own v. Lease, Installment v. Hire purchase, Make or buy, Shut down or continue, Sale of assets used for scientific research
MODULE-II: (6 hours)

Overview of CEA and CENVAT
·
Overview of Service Tax Provisions
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
shall be done through term examinations and quizzes. Weightage for different components is as under.

GRADING POLICY:
In case of quizzes, total marks secured in all quizzes will be summed up and divided by the total marks of all quizzes and then converted to 60% weightage. QPI will be determined taking overall performance of the class and will be based on a relative grading depending on the best performance.
PEDAGOGY:
Provisions of the Act will be discussed placing emphasis on judicial interpretation and their consequent effect on decision making. Application for managerial decision making will be demonstrated through solving numeric cases wherever there are alternatives available. All discussions will be supplemented by mini-cases wherever necessary.
EXPECTATION FROM STUDENTS: Y
ou have to read many provisions on your own and apply. The art of applying will be always demonstrated in the class room. No student should take this course unless he is prepared to read a lot on his own.
ABOUT COURSE MATERIAL:
Course material will be the recommended books. Class notes will be in a schematic form and is never a substitute for book reading.
