COURSE OUTLINE

A. Course Objective

It is a widely accepted notion that survival and prosperity of the software professionals depends upon how well they can deliver

quality

software at predicted

cost

and within committed

time

. Possession of programming skills is only the necessary condition to attain that goal, but more importantly, the software development has to be carried out in a more disciplined manner.

Software Engineering is the scientific discipline that enables systematic development of software, and management of the project activities. Over the years researchers and practitioners of this discipline have developed frameworks, development strategies, and methodologies for this purpose. The aim of the course Software Project Management is to provide students with an understanding of the principles, processes, and practices associated with the management of software-intensive projects.

At the end of the course the students are expected to acquire:
· Working knowledge on software project and process estimation techniques
· Working knowledge of the quality control techniques like inspection and testing
· Appreciation of software project management framework
· Appreciation of other management issues like team structure, group dynamics etc.

C. Pedagogy

Classroom lectures. There would one session involving a case analysis and discussion

Case Analysis

A case study on an issue related to

Software Project Management

would be analysed. The instructor would brief upon the case background at the start. The discussion would involve understanding of major issues/problems(s), examining facts and evidences, and then analysis based on knowledge / experience / understanding gained in the class.
