PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF MANAGEMENT

(2.0 Credits)

Course Outline

I. COURSE OBJECTIVES

Though management has been in practice for centuries by businessmen and traders, its currently prevalent form had its origin only in the early part of the 20th century. From simple rational approach to deployment of work force with a view to increase productivity to begin with, it has gradually encompassed variety of complexities and advanced models of decision making. The present course is designed to expose students to some of the basic ideas related to the subject. The course will cover subjects like evolution of management, management functions, legal forms of business, management processes, organization structure, approaches to managing, environment of business, culture, motivation, communication and ethical responsibility of business. To give the students the feel of the decision making process, some cases will be discussed in the class.

It may be noted that depending on the extent of coverage during the discussion additional cases and concepts may be introduced into the course. Reading materials for the sessions will be distributed to the students during the previous sessions.

While some of the reading will be provided directly to the students, students are requested to consult the following books kept in the Library.

An International Perspective

The students are requested to go through the Harvard Business Review and General Management Journals in the Library. Besides, they should also go through Indian periodicals

such as Business India, Business World and one or more business dailies.

IV. EVALUATION

1. Surprise Quiz : 20% (Best two out of three)
2. Class Participation : 10%
3. Mid Term : 30%
4. End Term : 40%
