INTRODUCTION:

The field of Human Resource Development is one that is being increasingly recognized and accepted as one of the most vital contributors to total organizational growth and effectiveness. Performance Management is one important area of HRD that contributes directly towards the healthy growth of the individual in the organization. Consequently, a good understanding of this area would enable a manager to help in developing and maintaining the dynamism and vitality of the organization.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1. To enable participants to understand the role of Performance Management in the Human Resource Development process.
2. To gain an insight into the various aspects of Performance Management and acquire the ability to build systems for effective performance evaluation suited to the needs and pressures of the organization and the environment.

The session plan may be modified as we proceed in case we feel the need for mid-course correction to enhance learning.


PEDAGOGY:

The course is largely case-based, so the theoretical input will be based on cases that will be discussed in class. Coverage will also be through use of lecturettes, interactive discussions, and experience sharing.


REQUIRED TEXT:

There is no required text for this course. Articles from research/ professional journals and chapters from different books are assigned as required readings for the course and have been included in the course material that has been compiled. Please collect the course material from the ExPGP office. You must go through the concerned reading once the topic has been discussed in class. The quizzes will have questions from the readings.

EVALUATION:
1. The Project Report will be a case study that you have to develop on the performance management system of your organization. You have to take up any incident/problem related to performance appraisal that either has happened with you or with someone else in your organization. The report has to include the following,
Due Date: Day of the Performance Management end term exam (December, 3rd, 2008)

2. There will be 3 quizzes during the course. These may be announced or unannounced. There is no provision for make-up quizzes. The marks of the best 2 quizzes will be counted for the final grade. Each quiz will carry 10% weightage.

3. Two assignments will be done during the course. These will be announced and completed in the class. Each assignment will carry 10% weightage.
