DETAILS OF THE COURSE
I. LEARNING OUTCOMES / OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course the participants are expected to
Ø
gain conceptual knowledge of the terms and topics of Performance Management and Performance Appraisal;
Ø
understand the importance of performance management and appraisal systems;
Ø
identify various management systems and practices, and develop critical ability to adopt the best among them in their work environment;
Ø
enhance their ability and practical skills for managing performance and conducting performance appraisal in their organizations;
Ø
gain insight into the ethical and legal implications of performance management and appraisal;
Ø
be prepared sufficiently for discharging the duties of an HR Manager in the areas of Performance Management and Appraisal.
II. THE PARTICIPANTS
Ø
It is intended for practicing managers and supervisors
ü
who manage the performance of their subordinates, and
ü
conduct their performance appraisal.
III. METHOD
The following methods of instruction/ learning will be used:
Power Point Presentations, Lecturettes, Group Activities, Class Presentations, Video Films and Case Studies.
An analytical-critical approach will be basic to the process of learning this course.
IV. ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS
The syllabus currently calls for the following assignments and tests :
1. FIELD STUDY REPORT
The participants in groups will visit a considerably large organization of their choice in their vicinity and make a study of an aspect of the actual performance management and appraisal practiced there. Notes on writing will be given in class. All in the group will get the same grade.
Its length : 4-6 pages.
A Report of this study is to be submitted to the Instructor on or before August 14, 2012.

(a) Performance Management :
Overview of the Course, Performance Management, Reasons for PM, How PM works, Objectives of PM, Effects of PM, PM strategy, Skill inventory, PM& Goal Setting, Performance Planning, Career & Succession Planning, Performance Monitoring & Counseling, Qualities of a good Performance Manager, Practical Guidelines for PM, Role of HR Manager in Performance Management, Ethical and Legal aspects of PM, etc.
(b) Performance Appraisal :
Issues and Problems in PA, Job Description and PA, Methods of PA, Appraisal Forms and Formats, Process and Documentation of PA, Performance Review Discussion, Appraisal Communication, Performance Feedback and Counseling, Implications of Management Styles on PA, Legal and Ethical Perspectives in PA. PA and its Organizational Implications, etc.
VIII. READING ASSIGNMENTS
A list of books on Performance Management and Appraisal is given below.
Books on Human Resource Management/Personnel Management usually contain
chapter(s) on Performance Management and/or Appraisal.
Many websites have articles on PM & A.
Rare articles on PM & A will be supplied in the class.
Each student is expected to know the contents of the topic(s) prescribed for each class.
This will be a help towards active participation in the class.
