The objective of the course is to give students conceptual and practical exposure for becoming Information System Professionals. The course would stress on usage of technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills for improving effectiveness of information system in business organizations. The course, through case studies, would lay emphasis on understanding business processes, assess the need for information systems and then identify areas where these information needs can be automated; it will also lay emphasis on understanding existing and emerging technology and how the technology can be used for meeting information needs of the organizations.

At the end of the course a participating student would have knowledge on (i) how to design information system based on business processes, (ii) factors that would determine the degree of automation and (iii) practitioners approach for implementing information system.

5. Evaluation

Evaluation Methods:

End term – 30%

Quiz 1 – 10% Scope: Discussion up to sessions 5

Quiz 2 – 10% Scope : Discussions up to sessions 10

Quiz 3 – 10% Scope : Discussions up to sessions 16

Major Assignment – 40%

Visit an organization as assigned. Prepare a case study. Case Study: Sections in the case study should have the following: 1. Vision & Mission statement of the organization, 2. Overview of the organization, industry description, Identification of significant problem/situation/ issue/ business processes in the organization, 3. Design and define information system (as is and to be), 4. Automation proposed for the complete information system (combined as is and to be), 5. ROI calculation for the proposed automation, 6. Conclusions and 7. Executive Summary

Weight-ages:

(i) Define Vision, Mission, corporate strategy – 5%

(ii) Describe business processes, design information system (s), (consider alternatives, architecture, technology, organization structure) based on (i) – 20%

(iii) To propose improvement in existing information system, to propose automation for the entire information system, ROI for the entire information system) – 10%

(iv) To write a case study – 5%

Deliverables: PPT to be presented in the class and case study as explained in (iv); There is no need to submit any report. Every week, the groups are advised to discuss with the faculty on the progress made in the assignment.

Groups will be decided by students. One organization can be allocated once only. Allocation of organizations for Major Assignment is as follows (these are tentative and may change within two weeks):

In case there is a problem with any of the above organizations, the groups are to choose from the following institutions: Panchayat Raj Instituions (PRI), DFID, Puri Grahmin Bank, Ayush hospital, IBAT, CYSD, PECOC, ORSAAC, ActionAid, Micro Finance Institution ( Basix, SKS, BISWA, KAS Foundation, SMCS, Awareness, Adhikar).

6. Academic Integrity
