Retail Management
Course Outline
Dr. Paromita Goswami
Overview
With the current boom in Retailing in India, understanding the retail environment becomes essential for a marketer who operates in any line of business which ultimately reaches out to the individual consumers. This course would attempt to provide a foundation to understand the retailing process and acquire key insights to the world of retailing. One should be able to acquire critical analytical skills useful for retail decision-making. The course would be interactive in nature, involving case discussions and an individual project assignment, in addition to occasional quizzes to gauge the student’s understanding of the coverage made in class.

Syllabus

Although a syllabus has been set, keeping in mind the objectives of the course, I would be happy to interact on any other issues related to retailing if the students so desire. For such topics which may be taken up for discussion on the basis of students’ queries/interest, a request may be made to me by email at paromita@ximb.ac.in before the course begins. The syllabi I wish to cover otherwise are detailed below:

1. Introduction
2. Types of Retailing (ownership, store-based, non-traditional)
3. Information gathering in Retailing
4. Customer Relationship Management in Retailing
5. Pricing
6. Retail location
7. Site Selection
8. Merchandise Plans
9. Buying Merchandise
10. Buying Systems
11. Store Layout
12. Supply Chain Management
13. Financial Performance

I wish to have discussions on at least three full-length cases in class which would be evaluated on the basis of the quality of points and issues put forth by students.
