Course Outline

Introduction: It is important to understand the existing and potential rural production system in order to develop and strengthen the livelihood system in villages. Both production and livelihood system for villagers are interrelated and should compliment each other. Like any other system, these systems too affect and get affected by both internal and external factors. To manage the system well we also need to understand the type and level of such influences. Understanding livelihood, various elements, and different approaches of livelihood analysis is required for a rural manager to put the same in practice.
Course Objectives: After the course is over student would be able to know and understand –

What constitute rural production system ?

What is livelihood and livelihood diversification ?

What are important concept related to Agriculture (the most important livelihood option of rural India)?

What are the important elements of Livelihood?

How to identify livelihood Opportunities?

What are the livelihood promotion dilemmas ?

Course Contents:

Fundamentals for the increasing rural production (Session 1 – 2)

Definition and concept of rural production system (Session 3)

Livelihood: Concept and Definition, Livelihood diversification (Sessions 4 – 5)

Understanding basic concept of Agricultural production system (Sessions 6 -7)

Elements of livelihood, Livelihood identification, Basix and DFID framework to understand livelihood (Session: 8 -12)

Practical process of opportunity identification (Session 13 – 14)

Various approaches to livelihood promotion (Sessions 15 – 16)

Appreciating the important debates for promoting livelihoods (17 – 18)

Analysis of ongoing livelihood promotion initiatives (19 -20)

Pedagogy:
Class room session, Review and analysis of literature, Presentations, Case study, mutual discussions and sharing of information.

Evaluation:
Quiz: 15%
Assignment: 40%
End term: 40%
Class participation: 5%
