Introduction
Technology is a knowledge package that enables an individual or an enterprise to create and deliver a market tenable product or service. It is a managerial activity that combines the functions of assimilation of knowledge created in-house and/or bought out, licensed and franchised from the national or global knowledge market.
Indian corporate sector has long depended upon technology acquisition from global sources. While the country posses a large pool of scientists and engineers, it is fact that even for setting up the most basic business ventures, Indian companies, in general, have to either seek technical collaboration or procure technologies from overseas at enormous cost. This is followed invariably by procurement of critical equipments and services from overseas and perpetual dependency on the technology supplier for all TM activities.
With Indian corporate sector is increasingly striving to carry their business off shore and becoming global, they have started feeling the pinch of trying to procure technologies from organizations with whom they now have to get on with ‘head on’ competition.
Indian companies, across the board, are now giving greater attention to all aspects of technology management to gain global competitive strength both in their products and services.
There are some unique features of human resource, financial, Technical, R&D, IPR, marketing and procurement issues, specific to the global Technology Management that the present course would deal with.
The course is not a science and engineering based course. It is a management course important not only for those interested in developing as future technology creators and managers but also HR, Finance, Operation Research and marketing executives who would get to work in technology driven companies and would get to become members of technology creation and audit teams at some stage of their career.
Most models, course curriculums available and presently under use at leading management institutions in India are ‘Western World’ oriented. Faculty has been working over last 8 years at developing an Indian model which is that of a predominantly technology buyer nation and also of a new entrant to the world of technology creation. There are very few text books on the subject. More so, that from an India outlook. Therefore, the course would mostly revolve around the material prepared specifically by the faculty, a hand book ” Technology Management by Prof. Khalil Ahmed”, and publications from CSIR, HBR , Sankalp, IGNOU and other journals.
