Advanced Corporate Finance
(Faculty: Prof. Banikanta Mishraa)
Course Content
: The basic course in financial-management (FM-I) has already introduced you to valuation principles, bond and stock valuation, risk and return, capital asset pricing model, cost of capital, capital structure, dividend policy, cash-flow estimation, and rudiments of capital-budgeting. In this advanced course in corporate-finance, you will be introduced to alternatives to CAPM, capital-budgeting for risky projects, capital allocation and corporate strategy, capital financial structure, capital structure and corporate strategy, financing and real asset valuation, financial planning and forecasting, debtholder-equityholder conflicts, dividend policy, and short-term financial-management (mainly cash management, inventory management, and credit management).
Text
: The text for this course is
Financial markets and Corporate Strategy
by Mark Grinblatt and Sheridan Titman (Tata McGraw Hill, 2nd Edition, 2002).
Grade:
Your course grade would be based on your performance in Class Participation (10%), five group-based Case Presentation and Reports (30%), and the Final Examination (60%). Make-up examinations would be given only in exceptional circumstances.
Class Participation
: All students are expected to take an active part in class discussions. If I find that you are very inactive in class, I would be forced to pull your grade down to the next lower level.
Code of Ethics
: You must abide yourself by the (unwritten)
Code of Ethics for Students
. For individual assignments/examinations, it is unethical to seek any direct help from others, whether or not you make use of the help. For group reports/assignments, all members of the group should contribute to the preparation of the reports/assignments (no free-riders); but no direct help should be sought or taken from persons outside the group. Discussions among individual students and groups (except in the examination hall or classroom) are, of course, always encouraged; but you must understand every word of what you or your team puts down in writing. I will give you an F in the course if you violate these ethical principles.
"No Name" Policy
: In all your solutions/ reports/ examinations, please mention only your Student ID(s) on the very last page (back page of the last sheet). Do not mention your name(s) anywhere, not even in the examination-answer-sheets. This ensures that the person grading your assignment/ examination does not know your identity.
Feedback
: Feedback is always useful, even to the most seasoned veteran. In that spirit (but, of course, without claiming to be either seasoned or a veteran), I would request you to submit the midterm-evaluation just after the midterm examination and the final-evaluation just after the final examination. The final-evaluation form, which is different from the "official" one you would receive from the Dean's Office, asks some specific questions regarding topics and cases (not touched upon by the official form).
