1. Course Description

Legal environment of business is as important as any other constituent element of the overall societal framework in which business operates. A business run with respect for law of the land is a hallmark of a well governed enterprise that creates value in the long run. History is replete with cases of extremely successful business houses which have gone down for violation of law and destroyed huge wealth. This course is an attempt to develop a sense of appreciation for taking business decisions in conformity with law.


2. Student Learning Outcomes (typically 3-5 bullet points)

Be able to understand principal laws regulating business

Be able to interpret various legal provisions regulating business and learn how to apply them through an exposure to case made laws.

Be able to learn as to how to start a business venture and run it successfully in conformity with legal parameters

3. Required Text Books and Reading Material

Handout for all sessions will be given. In addition to the handout, the prescribed text book has to be followed which has topic wise discussion as per the course plan.

The recommended text book is Mercantile Law by N.D.Kapoor.

5. Evaluation

It shall be done through term examinations, project assignments and quizzes. All quizzes will be under open book system. All term examinations will be under open book system. The students can carry handouts given and their class notes to the examination hall in case of term examinations. Weightage for different components is as under.

Quizzes
The quizzes will be objective in nature. Marks secured by the student in all quizzes will be added and converted to 40% weighted mark on a scale of 100.

Mid term/ End Term
The duration shall be for 1.5/ 2 hours. The questions will be a mix of numerical problems and caselet/case.

Grading Policy: Policy of the institute will be followed.

6. Academic Integrity

Students’ manual of policy of XIMB will have to be respected in letter and spirit. This includes but not limited to the policy on malpractice, plagiarism (should any assignment be given), etc.
