Aim of the Course: Human resource planning is a fundamental process in the domain of HRM. Organizations have made costly mistakes in not preparing for this process and in today’s well run organizations; HRP is the cornerstone of success. The main aim of this course is to provide the knowledge in the assessment, analysis and programming for human resources in the organization.

Learning Outcomes: After the successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

· Understand strategies to integrate HRP with the overall goals of the organization.
· Develop ability to make human resource forecasts
· Identify sources to plan for meeting HR needs of your company
· Analyze the emerging issues in the field of human resource planning.


Course Materials: The text book assigned is Strategic Human Resource Planning by Monica Belcourt Kenneth McBey. Thomson Nelson Publication. Also assortment of articles and reading materials would be provided to the participants along with selected case studies.

6. Forecasting processes in HR
7. Making estimates of HR demand
8. Assessing the supply of HR
9. Succession Planning
10. HR planning during downsizing and restructuring
11. HR planning during Mergers and Aqquisitions
12. Planning for HR in International HRM
13. Using HRMS in HR Planning

Assessment: Being an elective course for working executives, the primary focus of the assessment would be to test the ability of the students to transfer their conceptual learning to the real world managerial context. In order to achieve this, the following would comprise the assessment items.

Mid Term Exam: (30 marks): This will contain a set of multiple choice questions aimed at testing the conceptual clarity of the participants with regard to the course content. Reliance on memory is expected to be minimal. All discussions undertaken in the class till the date of the exam will form a part of this test.

End Term Exam: (40 marks): There will be an examination, which the students will be required to take at the end of the course. The examination would contain questions testing the application skills developed by the participants.

Instructor Profile: Dr. A. Dutta M.Com., PhD. is a Post Graduate in Business Finance from University of Calcutta and was awarded a Gold Medal for ranking first in the University and academic excellence. He completed his FPM from IIMT, specializing in Human Resource Management. Andrew was a Visiting Research Scholar to Bentley University, Massachusetts, USA where he developed his doctoral thesis in Information Systems under Dr. M. Lynne Markus. Before joining academics, Andrew worked in the advertising industry. He has publications in reputed national and international journals and edited books along with presentations in national and international conferences. Apart from teaching and research, Andrew is also involved in training in corporate and Government sector and providing consultancy through XIMB. Presently, he is the Admissions Coordinator in XIMB. He has conducted training programs for senior management level in reputed companies like Vedanta Aluminium, Paradeep Phosphates, NTPC, OTDC, CIFA, RWSS, Jindal Steel and Power Limited, Larsen and Toubro, NALCO, India Post, Bihar Administrative Service Officers, Assam Administrative Service Officers and many others. He is also a Certified Assessment Center Assessor, Certified PCMM Assessor and Master Trainer for NACO-GFATM for HIV-AIDS counselors and Master Trainer for Dept. of Public Enterprises, Govt. of India for CSR training.
