DETAILS OF THE COURSE
I. OVERVIEW
The objective of this course is to equip the participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to improve their ability for effective performance management and appraisal in their organizations. It is particularly intended for managers and supervisors who manage the performance of their subordinates and conduct their performance appraisal.
II. METHOD
The following methods of instruction / learning will be used :
Power Point Presentations, Lecturettes, Group Activities, Class Presentations, Video Films and Case Studies. An analytical-critical approach will be basic to the process of learning this course.
III. ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS
A. The syllabus currently calls for the following Assignments and Tests :
1. Construction of a
Performance Appraisal Form
by the students in groups. This assignment will not be graded.
This Form is due for presentation in class on June 12, 2011.

Field Study Report
The participants in groups will visit a considerably large organization of their choice in their vicinity and make a study of an aspect of the actual performance management or appraisal practiced there. All in the group will get the same grade.
Its length : 4-6 pages.
A Report of this study is due in class on July 3, 2011.
3. Mid-Term Test : May 29, 2011
4. End-Term Test : July 17, 2011
IV. GRADES
Grading will be done as follows:
Mid-Term Test
: 30%
Field Study Report : 30%
End-Term Test
: 40%
V. READING ASSIGNMENTS
A list of books on Performance Management and Appraisal is given below.
Books on Human Resource Management/Personnel Management usually contain chapter(s) on Performance Management and/or Appraisal.
Many websites have articles on PM & A.
A Folder with rare articles on PM & A are kept in the Center.
Each student is expected to know the contents of the topic(s) prescribed for each class. This will be a help towards active participation in the class.
