DETAILS OF THE COURSE
I. OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
Ø
To equip the participants with comprehensive knowledge and skills for performance management and appraisal;
Ø
To improve their ability for effective performance management and appraisal in their organizations;
Ø
It is intended for practising managers and supervisors
ü
who manage the performance of their subordinates; and
ü
conduct their appraisal.
II. METHOD
The following methods of instruction/ learning will be used:
Power Point Presentations, Lecturettes, Group Activities, Class Presentations, Video Films and Case Studies.
An analytical-critical approach will be basic to the process of learning this course.
III. ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS

The syllabus currently calls for the following assignments and tests :
1. FIELD STUDY REPORT
The participants in groups will visit a considerably large organization of their choice in their vicinity and make a study of an aspect of the actual performance management and appraisal practiced there. All in the group will get the same grade.
Its length : 4-6 pages.
A Report of this study is due in class on November 20, 2011.
2. MID-TERM TEST : October 30, 2011
3. END-TERM TEST : January 8, 2012
IV. GRADES
Mid-Term Test : 30%
Field Study Report : 30%
End-Term Test : 40%
V. READING ASSIGNMENTS
A list of books on Performance Management and Appraisal is given below.
Books on Human Resource Management/Personnel Management usually contain chapter(s) on Performance Management and/or Appraisal.
Many websites have articles on PM & A.
A Folder with rare articles on PM & A will be supplied in the class.
Each student is expected to know the contents of the topic(s) prescribed for each class. This will be a help towards active participation in the class.

Performance Appraisal, Issues and Problems in PA, Job Description and PA, Methods of PA, Appraisal Forms and Formats, Process and Documentation of PA, Appraisal Communication, Appraisal Interview, Performance Feedback and Counseling, Implications of Management Styles on PA, Legal and Ethical Perspectives in PA. PA and its Organizational Implications.
