International Seminar-cum-Workshop
Environmental Issues in Industrial Infrastructure Development
16-18 November 2000
XIM, Bhubaneswar 751013, INDIA
Topic and Theme: Industrial infrastructure development has high environmental impacts. A hydropower project, for example, causes deforestation, interferes with the flow regime, and causes involuntary displacement of people. A coal-fired power station causes air pollution with local and global consequences, results in water pollution and degrades land through coal mining and flyash disposal. A road project causes deforestation, interferes with the migration route of wildlife, blocks natural draining of water resulting in water logging, etc. Establishment of industrial townships results in congestion, insanitation, pollution, and law and order problems. Construction of a harbour directly affects marine ecology in an area of maximum productivity and diversity. Most of these adverse environmental impacts are preventable with proper impact assessment and environmental management planning.
Organisation, Sponsorship and Participation: This International Seminar-cum-Workshop on the Environmental Issues of Industrial Infrastructure Development (EIID) has been planned with an objective of bringing together industrial managers, planners, academics, etc., to seriously deliberate upon the issues and make necessary recommendations. The various organisations collaborating with the Xavier Institute of Management in organising the programme are the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, Central Pollution Control Board, India, US-Asia Environment Programme (US-AEP), and the Orissa State Pollution Control Board. Many industrial corporations, viz., Indian Aluminium Company, Utkal Alumina International, National Aluminium Company, JK Paper Mills, Ballarpur Industries, Ispact Alloys, National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd., and Paradeep Port Trust, are co-sponsoring the programme. Delegates from educational institutions, research organisations, and industries from all over India and some from USA are participating in it. There are about 15 invited speakers. The programme is spread over 3 days and will discuss the key environmental issues of infrastructure development activities like coal mining, power generation, construction of ports, and water resource projects.
This programme will contribute to our understanding of the environmental issues in infrastructure development.
