This is an extract from David Korten's "When Corporations Rule the World". Korten is an important and original commentator on the logic of global dynamics, especially global business dynamics. We have significant differences with his conceptual framework; we also do not quite share his bleak view of the management profession. The advantages of the extract below are its exemplary lucidity on a rather complex theme, its systemic view, and its emphasis on the inter-play of the major economic institutions - firms, markets, financial markets, nation-states ... which shape and reshape the world.
