Introduction:

The path of the doctoral journey is fraught with feelings of uncertainty and doubts as to whether one is moving in the right direction. Unlike other degrees, this degree does not involve a set system from which one may gauge the quality of work one is doing. One does not get marks or grades which help one understand where one stands in comparison with others who are pursuing the journey or have taken up the journey in the past.  Publishing of doctoral work in peer-reviewed publications help in reducing the feeling of uncertainty referred to earlier. Before one defends one’s thesis, publishing is a sure-shot way of feeling more confident of one’s work, and also convincing the examiners of the quality of the work. In fact, some universities and institutes do not allow pre-submission seminar before you have a certain number of doctoral publications to your credit.

In this backdrop, I shall attempt to discuss how to get one’s doctoral work published: how to choose the right avenue for publication, how to avoid loss of time in the publication process, the necessity of uploading working papers in sites like SSRN, the benefits of peer-reviews, the do’s and don’ts of writing papers, the learning experience from a paper rejected by a publication, the advantages of connecting and networking with people working in similar areas, the usefulness of perseverance, and any other issues that may crop up during the discussion. I wish to keep the session totally interactive and mean to share my experiences as a doctoral researcher. Keeping in mind the fact that I received my doctoral award in April, 2007 and have completed publishing all chapters of my thesis, I feel I am ready to share the mistakes I made, so that others may avoid the same!
