Research Training Seminar 6.4

Research as a Gendered Practice

Elinor W. Gadon
Women's Studies Research Center, Brandeis University, USA
elinorgadon2000[at]yahoo.com

Date: August 1, 2008 (Friday); Time: 2:30 p.m.
Venue: Multi-Media Hall (MMH), XIMB Campus

The seminar would focus on how both men and women see the world through their gendered lens, which is both insidious and little acknowledged, and its impact on research.

"Knowing the world around is often considered as the objective of research. As the research unfolds, it also becomes a process of self-discovery for the researcher. The deep relationship between the researcher and the research question enables the researcher to engage with the world more fully and know more about it" -- from her previous seminar at XIMB (Creative Research / Creating Possibility for Action).

"Research is said to be about generating new knowledge. But this cannot always be done with old ways. We have a saying in the academic feminist circles that one cannot dismantle the master’s house with the master’s tools--to transform society you need new social practices. Therefore, research is also about creating new tools and practices more suited to the task one undertakes. This was indeed the focus of the PhD program in women’s studies I designed at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS)" -- from: Gadon, E. W. (2006). My life’s journey as researcher. Journal of Research Practice, 2(2), Article M1. Retrieved July 31, 2008, from http://jrp.icaap.org/index.php/jrp/article/view/40/53
