Introduction: Koen Beumer, a research student from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, will talk about his journey as an amateur researcher. Using his experiences on researching the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) during his stay at XIMB, Koen will talk about the opportunities and constraints when doing research from scratch. He has a truly interdisciplinary background, and was not guided by strict guidelines, methodologies, or research proposals. Working not only on a new topic in a new field of studies, but also in a new institutional setting, Koen will reflect on the process of freely exploring a topic by using ideas and concepts on the one hand and collecting empirical observations on the other.
