Research Training Seminar 6.13 The Theory of Constraints: Research and Research Opportunities Raman Kumar Agrawalla TCS-Innovation Lab, Hyderabad raman.a[at]tcs.com Date: Feb 27, 2009 (Friday); Time: 2:30 p.m. Venue: Multimedia Hall, XIMB Campus, Bhubaneswar The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management philosophy for continuous improvement. The basic principle of TOC is about finding the weakest link (the constraint or the bottleneck, which could be physical or policy related) in the system-chain and doing everything required to strengthen it so that the efficiency and effectiveness of the system as a whole improves. TOC comprises various methods, namely The Five Focusing Steps, The TOC Thinking Processes, Throughput Accounting, Application-Specific TOC Solutions such as managing operations, resources, projects, distribution, marketing, sales, and strategy, etc. It is argued that the TOC Thinking Processes can be used to solve any problem anywhere in an organization. The technique drives you to find answer to three generic questions: (a) what to change, (b) to change to what, and (c) how to cause the change and accomplish the desired state. All are welcome!
