Prof. M. G. Jomon (Human Resource Management)
Dr. Jomon joined XIMB faculty recently. He was working with Apollo Tyres as Manager--HR. Prior to this, he was with Alexandria Carbon Black, Egypt. His doctoral thesis (under XLRI-AHRD doctoral programme), titled A study on the effectiveness of HRD Audit as an OD Intervention was co-guided by Dr. T. V. Rao and Dr. Udai Pareek. He has authored three books: Road to Empowerment -- HRD for workers and support staff, Innovations in Higher Education and HRD in Real Times. He has also published a number of articles on HRD, OD, Education, and the Informal Sector. Dr. Jomon is entering into full-time academics with an admirable mixture of experience in teaching, research, consulting, and corporate practice.

Prof. Rao is a member of the State-level committee set up for mapping food insecurity areas and monitoring hunger deaths in the most vulnerable blocks in Orissa. The project is a co-ordinated effort of the Government of Orissa, XIMB, and Hunger Project India.

Prof. D. N. Rao, Prof. S. Govindarjan, and 3 PGP 2003 students have written a paper on micro-privatisation, which is accepted for the International Water Management Institute's annual workshop to be held at IRMA during 25 - 28 January. The workshop is co-hosted by the Ratan Tata Foundation.

Conducted a one-day workshop on Creative Problem Solving for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Corporation, on 28 Dec 2002. The topic had been identified by Coca-Cola India's corporate headquarters in Mumbai. The objective of the workshop was to revitalise the divergent thinking abilities of the managers who attended, so that they would become more comfortable in working with ambiguity. These managers were exposed to the creativity enhancing techniques of Brainstorming, Checklist of Questions, and Synectics. They were also encouraged to identify their personal barriers to creativity, as well as work on inproving their proclivities to creativity. Finally, the managers learnt how to strenghthen the PI Motive (the creativity motivation).

Conducted an in-company programme on Communication for Self-Development for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Corporation, during 23-24 Dec 2002. The programme stressed that communication and self-development complement each other. The programme also tried to show how effective communication leads to organisational sustenance and development.

1. Delivered a talk on Power Sector Reforms in Orissa at IIM, Bangalore, on 4 June, in one of their Management Development Programmes.
2. Participated in an international workshop on Incentive and Performance Based Regulation. South Asia Regional Initiative in Energy (SARIE) conducted the workshop at Colombo during 27 May to 31 May.
3. Delivered a talk on Application of Activity-Based Costing and Management at the Continuous Professional Education Programme of the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Chapter of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI), held at Bhubaneswar on 15 May 2002.
4. Delivered a talk on Balance Sheet Restructuring: A Case of Wrong Priorities at the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, on 27 March 2002.

Prof. Snigdha Patnaik and Prof. Jaydeep Mukherjee have successfully completed the Power User Computing course offered by E-Com Network Services, a franchisee of WOW (World Organisation of Webmasters). It was a three months' course covering office applications, computer networks, Internet, and web design, sponsored by the Institute. The Institute has extended this facility to all faculty-members, many of whom have availed of it. They are at various stages in the course.

Contributed entries in a reference book on management science published in 2002, titled The Informed Student Guide to Management Science, edited by H. Daellenbach and R. Flood. It is an encyclopaedic collection of short essays and descriptions of concepts in management science. The book is published by Thompson, London.

I have spent a week at Lowe India (Lintas), Mumbai, trying to update myself with the latest developments in the Advertising area. I have spent time in their Client Services, Media, Creative and Rural Communications wings. This will help me contemporise my course on advertising. I have been able to interest them in forging a longer association with our Institute.

Co-conducted a workshop titled The Intimate Space, meant to be a relationship workshop for couples, for IPCL employees in Nagothane, near Mumbai. The workshop used two conceptual frameworks: Appreciative Inquiry and Self-Differentiation. Such programmes for couples, where either or both the spouses work outside home, are rare in India. The workshop received rave reviews from the participants.

Prof. Patra presented a paper titled Does Anthropocentric View Rest on a Mistake? at the National Seminar on Environmental Ethics, organised by the Department of Philosophy, Christ Church College, Kanpur, during 21-23 February 2002. The seminar was sponsored by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research. The central argument of his paper is in favour of a cosmocentric view, rather than an anthropocentric one, in order to promote a harmonious development among the living and non-living elements of nature.

I have presented a paper on Distribution Reforms Models: Experience of BSES in Rural Orissa, in the International Conference of Distribution Reforms, held during 11-12 October 2001 in New Delhi, organised by FICCI in partnership with the French Government. The paper discusses the experience of using village electricity committes as intermediaries for electricity distribution.

We are involved in a consulting assignment for WESCO and NESCO, two utility companies owned by BSES. The assignment involves replicating STD booth type retailing arrangements for power distribution in villages of Orissa. It is done mainly through social intermediation, energy audit, and rural retail franchisee development, backed by village para-electricity-workers. The project has reached its final mode of retailer development in 4000 odd villages in Orissa. It is acknowledged as a 'ground breaking achievement' in rural power distribution. The project's success has made utilities in Karnataka, AP, Punjab, and West Bengal interested in its replication. We have signed a contract for Karnataka and are about to sign one for AP. We have also received a request from Nigeria for a similar assignment.

Professor Ibha Kumar’s book, Expressions of Politeness and Gratitude: Towards a General Theory, has been published (ISBN 81-215-1025-2). The book is based on her doctoral research at IIT, Kanpur. Her work seeks to explain polite behaviour and polite communication in terms of two principles: principle of individual existence and principle of social existence.

Conducted a two-day programme on business communication and presentation skill for ITR, Chandipur, during 25-26 Aug 2001. This programme stressed the importance of effective communication for better management. It emphasised the importance of the communication climate prevailing in an organisation. The programme included techniques for making effective business presentations.

Professors Mohanty and Tripathi conducted a two-day programme on selling skills for L&T - Medical Division on Feb 8th and 9th, 2002 at Hotel Mayfair Lagoon, Bhubaneswar. Participants were from the eastern regional sales team along with some key dealers. The feedback has been quite positive.

Co-conducted a one-day workshop jointly with Mr. Khirod Patnaik of Learning Associates, for the managers of Greater Ganjam Gajapati Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Limited, at Gopalpur, Orissa. The workshop was aimed at team-building and exploring long-term directions for the Union. It was conducted under the aegis of Indo-Swiss Natural Resources Management Programme Orissa.

I have been involved in a small project to develop a training manual for the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of Orissa. This manual is for a 10-day programme on Human Resource Management, which is held for the Senior Veterinary Officers of the Department. The Veterinary Officers Training Institute (VOTI), Bhubaneswar has been conducting this programme on HR for the last 3 years, but it didn’t meet the needs of the organisation. My assignment was to guide and work with the VOTI team to develop a training programme that would be based on a proper training need analysis and would deliver a module that would be focused, meaningful, and useful for the trainees and the organisation.

You will be happy to know that I have been elected as the Vice-President of the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) in its recently concluded AGM. This means that I will take over as the President of AIMS from August 2002. I consider this a great honour and recognition of our Institute nationally. AIMS has over 300 member Institutions comprising around 70-80% of management faculty and students in the country.

Dr. Kaushik Sahu has set up a laboratory named the COMPUTER AIDED PRODUCT AND PROCESS DEVELOPMENT LAB with the help of a grant of Rs. 7 lacs from the AICTE. It will be used for supporting research, teaching, and consultancy activities. The Laboratory will provide a platform to assist the industry in the small and medium sector to plan and implement effectively their product design and process planning activities, as also to foster Concurrent Product and Process Development initiatives. Currently work has been initiated in the broad areas of New Product Development and Designing for Supply Chains in the Housing Industry. I visited Singapore in June 2001 to attend a workshop on Activity Based Costing (ABC). The workshop was conducted by ABC Technologies Ltd. of USA. I am also an Academic Associate of ABC Tech. It was an intensive two days of workshop coupled with a useful discussion with the representatives of some of the local businesses who have implemented ABC.

I attended the Singapore Alumni Meeting on 24 June. One of the important issues discussed was the possibility of inviting Singaporean companies for campus placement. I am happy to inform you that my local hospitality had been taken care of by one of our alumni Mr. Rajit Nanda and his wife Sikha. Rajit is working with Tractabel and Sikha with Nokia.

Besides the Workshop and the Alumni Meet, I had the opportunity to interact with the Chairman of the Research Programmes (Ph.D) of Nanyang Technological University, Dr. P Tan Hun Tong. Dr. Tong is also the head of the Accounting School under the Nanyang Business School. He is keen to have Indian students for various research programmes.

Professor Patra has authored a book titled An Introduction to Scientific Method (ISBN 81 85531 18 8). The book deals with some long-standing issues in the philosophy of science. It discusses the Popperian and Kuhnian models of science and indicates some alternative models for the consideration of researchers in various disciplines.

I come from Puri, a secular town in Orissa, which truly believes in the principle of World as a Family. I studied in a Convent in Puri and postgraduated in Political Science from the Hindu College, Delhi. I have taught Political Science for a year but subsequently changed track to work as a management professional. I have worked in the human resource management area for over 18 years in an integrated steel plant and was holding the position of Technical Advisor to the top management in HR area when I decided to return to academia. During my stint in management, I tried to keep pace with theoretical developments and incidentally earned a postgradute degree in Public Administration, and two PG Diplomas in Social Welfare and Management. I taught an elective in the IR area as a Visiting Faculty last year, which encouraged me to join XIMB as a full-time member now. I am a Life Member of the National Institute of Personnel Management and have published a few papers in NIPM jounals and conference souvenirs. I have enrolled for PhD at Utkal University. I am very happy to be part of the XIMB family.

I am studying the implication of corporate reporting practices on corporate governance and trying to find out the means to improve these practices. I had been to NSE , UTI School of Capital Markets, and the Centre for Corporate Research & Training (CCRT), set up at Mumbai by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). I came across a rich literature at ICSI-CCRT. I am preparing a questionaire to make a primary survey among academicians, professionals, and executives on the above topic.

I used to head the Godrej Appliances branch at Bhubaneswar and have previously worked for ICI Paints and Aristocrat Luggages, in the areas of branch management, product management, and sales training.
