About Human Resource Development (HRD)

HRD is a specialised area of human resource (HR) management. It is a process-oriented function relating to individual, role, team, and organization. The eight HRD values, viz. OCTAPACE values (Openness, Trust, Pro-action, Confrontation, Collaboration, Authenticity, Autonomy, and Experimentation), give a sense of direction to the HRD function. An organisation that espouses these values would have a greater chance of achieving desired outcomes like, competent people, well developed roles, high engagement, greater job involvement and satisfaction, team work and synergy, and an environment enabling growth and learning. The HRD function thus contributes towards organizational effectiveness indicated in the effectiveness variables such as high productivity, growth and diversification, cost reduction, profits, and a better image of the organization.

Research in HRD has explored and tried to understand key issues and debates concerning methodological principles, and the possibilities and limitations of particular methods and techniques. The field of HRD is an interdisciplinary one bringing together literature from economics, education, management, sociology, and psychology.
