Course Outline
Business Policy
Professor D. P. Dash

Objectives

This course is designed to provide an exposure to the tasks of the senior management team in an organisation. Managerial responsibilities at that level are cross-functional and integrative in nature. The primary task of management at that level is to secure a healthy and sustainable future for the organisation by orchestrating all organisational resources and capabilities towards moulding itself and the larger environment to the long-term advantage of the organisation. This calls for an awareness of the evolving nature of the environment and the complex interdependence among the various organisations operating in it. The course will help students appreciate the nature of strategic thinking and make them more confident in assuming senior management responsibilities in future.

Pedagogy

The pegadogy will be a mixture of lectures, presentations, group discussions, and strategy simulation (requiring individual and team work).

The course will offer experiential learning through a computer-based business simulation system called CapstoneŽ (www.capsim.com). Through the system, student-teams will compete against each other for business success within a simulated industry. Teams must analyse the economic conditions of the simulated environment, ensure smooth production, understand customers' requirements, use company-level and industry-level data to make decisions in various areas of management. The teams will implement a business strategy, make operational adjustments to that strategy, and then analyse the result through several rounds of simulated business operations.
