Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: What is unique about the doctoral programme at XIMB?
A: We emphasise greater faculty-student interaction and stronger research training. Research Training Seminars (RTS) are conducted throughout the year, focusing on research thinking and research practice. Students develop a number of important research skills through these seminars. A Doctoral Summer School (DSS) is arranged annually as a one-week residential programme for doctoral students nearing their thesis proposal stage, with participants coming from various institutions. Please read more about this from the DSS Web site.

Q2: Is the XIMB doctoral programme recognised as equivalent to a PhD programme?
A: The XIMB doctoral programme is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory body of the Government of India, vide their letter number 431/36-11/(MCP)(M)/95, dated February 17, 2007 and 431/36-11(MCP)(M)/95, dated May 8, 2008. However, this approval does not automatically imply an equivalence with the PhD programmes offered by Indian universities.

Q3: Is there a part-time option for working executives?
A: No. we do not have a part-time option. Ours is a full-time residential programme. The programme requires full-time residential commitment for about two years (i.e., until thesis registration). Please read the programme overview.

Q4: Is there a placement service for the FPM?
A: No.

Q5: Is the course work compulsory?
A: Yes. However, some courses may be waived depending upon a candidate's academic background and research interest. Students seeking course waivers should be prepared to write an examination to prove their proficiency in those courses.

Q6: What happens when a student does not meet the qualifying marks in the course work?
A: The student will be asked to leave.

Q7: Is it possible to complete the programme in less than three years?
A: Not possible, in general. Of course, there can be exceptional candidates with excellent academic background, who have already made siginificant progress in research. But, this will be rare.

Q8: Should I choose a research area in advance?
A: Yes. You should indicate two research areas of your choice in your application form. However, during your first year in the programme, you will be able to change your research area preference.

Q9: Should I choose a research guide in advance?
A: Since our research areas are coupled with research guides, choosing a research guide goes together with choosing a research area. Please read the Pre-application Contact portion of the FPM Leaflet.

Q10: How should I contact the research guides?
A: You can email the potential guides or meet them in person, with prior appointment. The main PBX number at XIMB is: (0674) 3012345.

Q11: Would I get some leave/vacations during the programme?
A: There are no annual vacations for FPM students. Short leaves would be granted when necessary. Longer leaves are not common. Any special circumstances should be discussed at the time of admission interview.

Q12: Would the Institute encourage and fund participation in conferences and seminars related to my area of research?
A: Yes, subject to a maximum allowable budget.

Q13: Does the Institute have any collaborative ties with other institutions (within and outside India) for doctoral student exchange?
A: Not at present.

Q14: I am married. Would I be given family accommodation?
A: Currently, there is a shortage of campus accommodation for both single and married FPM students. However, various alternative arrangements are possible. You should discuss your accommodation requirements with us.

Q15: Would living outside the campus be permitted?
A: If the Institute cannot provide suitable campus accommodation, then you will be permitted to live outside the campus.
